Travel Tips

Tampa International Airport in Florida is the largest international airport in Florida

As air travel continues to become more expensive for the average vacationer, it is helpful to look to surrounding airports for better deals on airline prices. If you are planning on staying in one of the vacation rental homes in Venice, don’t forget to look for reasonable airline prices at the Tampa International Airport. With more than 21 commercial airline carriers and nearly 18 million passengers passing through the Tampa airport on a yearly basis, this is the largest airport within 100 miles of Venice. Located approximately 78 miles north of Venice, which will take between 1 hour and an 1 ½ to drive, this is a great option for travelers trying to save some extra vacation spending money.

Especially if you are planning on flying from an international location, or a location far removed from Florida, Tampa will most likely offer the most affordable rates for travelers. There are five terminals in the Tampa airport, A, C-F, although D is currently closed for renovations, and three levels. The airport even houses its own hotel, which may be convenient if you are flying into the area late. This would give you a chance to rest and start out for Venice in the morning.

Level 1 contains the baggage claim and the ground transportation divided into the “red” and “blue” sections. As you are leaving your terminal, check to see if your luggage will be arriving in red or blue, this will save you extra time scouring the baggage claim area. Level 2 contains only the ticket counters, so this is where you will want to be dropped off when returning from vacation and Level 3 houses all terminals. The airport offers a variety of shops, restaurants, currency exchange, and duty free shops that may not be available at other smaller airports in the area. Keep this in mind especially if you need to exchange currency. It is better to do this before you get started on your trip and spend time searching for a bank or financial institution that will exchange this for you.

There are several options for ground transportation once you arrive. The Greyhound Bus Terminal is located in downtown Tampa, on Polk Street, but can be reached by the area transit bus. For Greyhound information call 800-231-2222 or call the Tampa terminal direct at 813-229-2174. The terminal is open 24 hours for bus transit. To reach the Tampa area transit call 813-254-4278 or simply head to the Red Baggage Claim area where there are busses leaving on a regular basis. Another great public transportation option is the Sarasota Tampa Express, 800-326-2800, which runs daily between Sarasota and Tampa. Although Venice is still 25-30 miles from Sarasota, this would be cheaper than renting a taxi for the entire 78 mile trip.

The airport also houses on-site and off-site rental car services. On-site services include:
Avis 800-831-2847
Budget 800-527-0700
Enterprise 800-736-8222
Hertz 800-654-3131
Dollar 800-800-4000

There are a handful of Florida based car rental services off-site, but major off-site services include:
Alamo 800-327-9633
National 800-227-7368

To find Venice in a rental car from the airport, head south towards route 60/Memorial Pkwy, which will immediately take you to I-275S towards St. Petersburg. Stay here for nearly 40 miles and then merge onto I-75S and remain for 30 miles to exit 200/SR-681. Exit and head south towards Venice/Nokomis. You will soon reach US-41/Tamiami Trail. Continue to head south through Nokomis and Tamiami Trail will take you into Venice.
